Shea, a vital resource for the cosmetics, food, and health industries, remains central to the economic wellbeing of thousands of Nigerian households. By championing sustainable access to shea resources, NASPAN continues to demonstrate its commitment to the growth, protection, and proper utilization of Nigeria’s shea value chain.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, the President of NASPAN emphasized that sustainable shea utilization cannot be achieved without the involvement of the communities who rely on the resource. He highlighted that the MoU opens opportunities for local collectors and processors who were previously unable to access large quantities of unused shea nuts lying within protected parks due to strict access restrictions.
“With this partnership, NASPAN is ensuring that valuable shea resources no longer go to waste while promoting practices that respect and preserve our natural environment,” he stated.
Under the agreed modalities, NASPAN members will be granted controlled access to collect shea nuts only from approved zones, ensuring that harvesting activities do not disturb wildlife or disrupt the ecological balance of the parks. The MoU maintains a strict prohibition on farming or any activity that could degrade the park environment.
The collaboration affirms NASPAN’s leadership role in advocating for structured, sustainable, and economically viable approaches across the shea sector. It also strengthens the association’s commitment to empowering rural collectors, enhancing resource efficiency, and supporting Nigeria’s broader conservation goals.
This milestone underscores NASPAN’s continuous efforts to improve industry standards, deepen partnerships, and expand opportunities for its members nationwide.
